Taking the time to explore them gives an appreciation of the efforts being made on many levels and in countless ways towards freedom and peace in our world. The sites also exemplify a diverse range of focus and ideas and all are not necessarily shared by Planetary Promotions (and may not be by you the reader). However, all groups profiled here have the intent of creating change for the good, and it is in our collective thoughts, words, intentions, and actions that we will achieve that common goal. ESR Metro was founded in New York City 1982 by educators concerned about the dangers of nuclear war, with a mission to help people develop the skills and convictions they need to shape a just, peaceful, and democratic society. ESR Metro works in collaboration with the public schools by helping to integrate conflict resolution and intercultural understanding into the daily life of schools throughout the city. |
Mt. Diablo Peace Center
Mt. Diablo Peace Center is non-profit organization working to create a world that is free of violence. The center offers workshops for parents and educators; "Raising Peaceful Children" is a program developed by the Mount Diablo Peace Center as a step towards nurturing peace in the next generation. The website also offers selected web articles, a Peace Gazette, a calendar of events, links, and forums. |
PeaceJam Foundation
PeaceJam is an international education program built around leading Nobel Peace Laureates who work personally with youth to pass on the spirit, skills and wisdom they embody. The goal of PeaceJam is to inspire a new generation of peacemakers who will transform their local communities, themselves, and the world. The program is for high school-aged youth, high school teachers, youth group leaders, and college-age mentors. Examples of past program curriculums are outlined on the site. |
Student Peace Action Network (SPAN)
The Student Peace Action Network was initiated in 1995 to bring the voices and energy of young activists into the peace movement. SPAN is a grassroots peace and justice organization working from campuses across the United States. SPAN works to promote nuclear disarmament, an end to all violence caused by militarism, a foreign policy based on human rights and international cooperation, and a U.S. domestic agenda that supports human and environmental concerns. |

Artists for Peace
Artists for Peace was launched in 2003 "to revive the vision of freedom and justice for all." With the belief that the arts are a nurturing element of peace, a virtual gallery has been established to provide a forum for artists to present their statements for world peace and justice. A percentage from the sales of the art works, as pledged by the artists, is donated to Artists for Peace educational programs. |
The Atomic Mirror
"Reflecting and Transforming Our Nuclear World through the Arts". The Atomic Mirror uses the creative arts to reveal the secrets of the nuclear age and to advocate for the abolition of nuclear weapons and power. It provides ongoing political analysis of nuclear issues from an international perspective and works in collaboration with like-minded organizations to promote a nuclear-free world. |
Foundation for Global Community
The history of Foundation for Global Community can be traced back more than 80 years. The points of focus have varied along with events in the world, however the mission has always been towards innovative and mindshifting ideas. Through courses and seminars, discussion groups and presentations to the public, the purpose has been to challenge people to become educated about critical issues, to educate others, and to take personal action in their own lives. |
Musicians' Alliance for Peace (MAP)
Musicians' Alliance for Peace brings musicians together to promote peace through performances of live multimedia events as well as benefit and memorial concerts. In February 2004, MAP coordinated the first Music for Peace Project, resulting in 73 concerts played in 13 countries in 50 hours. Local MAP members have presented numerous individual performances locally and have built relationships with artists and presenters worldwide. |
Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (NYC Metro)
WILPF-NY Metro is the NYC chapter of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, the oldest and largest women's peace organization in the world. (1915) WILPF works for world arms disarmament, full rights for women, racial and economic justice and an end to all forms of violence. On an upbeat, lighter note, "The Raging Grannies and their Daughters", WILPF's singing troupe, creatively bring the truth to the people in song and performance. |
Writers Against War
Writers Against War is a literary e-zine profiling original anti-war and peace-themed poetry, nonfiction essays, fiction, statements, song lyrics, photography, and art. The pain of war and visions of peace are the primary themes of this website, created in memory of people whose lives have been cut short by war. New works are published quarterly. |

Brooklyn Parents for Peace is a network of Brooklyn parents, neighbors, and educators formed in 1984 in response to growing militarism and its effects on society and the future of all children. This group's focus is hands-on and educational, accomplished through community meetings, study groups, information tables, participating in phone and advertising campaigns, meeting with elected officials and participating in demonstrations. |
Citizens For A United Earth
Citizens for a United Earth is a group of individuals in the area of Rochester, NY, who envision a peaceful, sustainable, prosperous future for all the world's people. They believe that the time has come for global citizenship, with people aware of their interdependence with others all over the world. "Earth Plan" and other essays outline their philosophies and the [PEACE] E-mail List share articles about peace, the environment, population, and the world's future. |
Coalition For World Peace
Coalition for World Peace is a working group involved in protests, outreaches, demonstrations, vigils, and major campaigns. Their alignment with such diverse groups as AIM Southern California Chapter (American Indian Movement) , Alliance for Democracy, Center for the Advancement of Nonviolence, CISPES (Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador), Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace, and many others, is creating one of the strongest peace movements in the history of Los Angeles. |

Oak Park Coalition for Truth and Justice is a Chicago group promoting awareness of events, exploring humanitarian alternatives to war and protecting civil liberties. The group offers their website and public forum message board in service to create bridges to other groups with like-minded goals and interests. |

Syracuse Peace Council (SPC)
Syracuse Peace Council is the oldest independent grassroots peace and social justice organization in the country, founded in 1936. SPC educates, agitates and organizes to create a world of peace and justice for all people. It publishes the monthly Peace Newsletter, conducts a range of educational and activist projects and campaigns and has a weekly cable access television program. |

ACTION Northwest is a non-profit organization focused on increasing solidarity between regional Pacific Northwest social activist groups. California Peace Action
California Peace Action aims to reduce the threat of nuclear weapons, end U.S. arms sales to human rights-abusing governments, cut excessive military spending, and promote international cooperation. It is a statewide peace organization, with offices in Los Angeles, Santa Cruz, and Berkeley as well as several local grassroots chapters. California Peace Action is the west coast segment of the larger national group Peace Action. |
Maine Coalition for Peace and Justice
Maine Coalition for Peace and Justice is a statewide organization of individual citizens and Maine group representatives working collectively and nonviolently for social equality, economic justice, direct democracy, and regenerative environmental policies. Goals include achieving sustainable living, sharing information cooperatively, building strong alliances for projects, and pursuing strategies to abolish militarism. |

New Yorkers Say No To War is a "diverse group of individuals meeting to explore alternatives to war in the face of their grief fear and anger following the events of 9-11-01". It works at local levels in California, throughout the United States, and around the world. The Resource Center for Nonviolence offers a wide-range of educational programs in the history, theory, methodology, and current practice of nonviolence as a force for personal and social change. |
WESPAC Foundation
WESPAC Foundation is a broad-based, progressive, activist organization actively working for peace, justice and no nukes for 25 years. American Friends Service Committee (AFSC)
The American Friends Service Committee carries out service, development, social justice, and peace programs throughout the world. Founded by Quakers in 1917 to provide conscientious objectors with an opportunity to aid civilian war victims, AFSC's work attracts the support and partnership of people of many races, religions, and cultures. AFSC's work is based on the Quaker belief in the worth of every person and faith in the power of love to overcome violence and injustice. |
Center on Conscience & War (CCW)
"To Defend and Extend the Rights of Conscientious Objectors to War and Violence". The Center on Conscience & War (CCW), formerly the National Interreligious Service Board for Conscientious Objectors (NISBCO), was formed in 1940 by an association of religious bodies. CCW works to defend and extend the rights of conscientious objectors and is committed to supporting all those who question participation in war. |
National Campaign for a Peace Tax Fund (NCPTF)
The National Campaign for a Peace Tax Fund works on behalf of those who cannot, in good conscience, pay taxes to fund the military. NCPTF lobbies and organizes support for the Religious Freedom Peace Tax Fund Bill, which, if passed, would allow conscientious objectors to pay their federal taxes into a fund earmarked for nonmilitary purposes only. NCPTF also works internationally to promote conscientious objection to military taxation as a human right in the UN. |

The Not In Our Name Project is a national network of individuals and organizations founded in 2002 and is committed to standing with the people of the world. As the Not In Our Name Pledge of Resistance states, "we believe that as people living in the United States it is our responsibility to resist the injustices done by our government, in our names." The Project embraces with all background, from major urban areas to small communities across the country. |
United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ)
United for Peace and Justice, formed in 2002 with a beginning core group of about 70 organizations, has grown to a national coalition of more than 800 local and national peace and justice groups throughout the United States. These groups have united forces to oppose the government's policy of permanent warfare and empire-building. UFPJ organizes and publicizes rallies, marches and teach-ins around the country and worldwide. |
Women In Black (WiB)
With a history that can be traced back to 1988, Women in Black is committed to peace with justice and is actively opposed to injustice, war, militarism and other forms of violence. WiB includes women of many ethnic and national backgrounds, co-operating across these and other differences in the interests of justice and peace. An electronic list-serve and country coordinators initiated in 2000 by the Spanish women of Mujeres de Negro have helped to unify and grow a worldwide network of women working for peace. |
